Chapter 5: Dell Case Study

Sorry to keep you waiting! Students online and on-campus, you are welcome to offer your thoughts on the Dell case study from Chapter 5 (pp. 153-154) here.

Some updates:

  1. Dell remains the world’s second-largest computer maker, but even they are struggling in the recession. Dell announced a reorganization at the end of 2008 in response to decreasing demand for PCs. In 2008 Q3, Dell profits dropped to $727 million (they made $766 million in Q3 2007).
  2. Interestingly, on Oct. 31 last year, HP reported a 2% increase in revenue, 4% increase in net income, and 10% increase in PC sales.
  3. That article on HP also notes that since 2007 Q2, Dell has cut 11,600 jobs.
  4. Not that HP is immune to the downturn: following an October move to cut 133 jobs in Ireland, HP is asking another 1500+ Irish employees to take an eight-day vacation to allow HP to shutter the Leixlip inkjet plant for a couple weeks. Things could be worse: down in Limerick, Dell is cutting 1900 jobs.
